He often mentions and rants about Jamie Oliver (whom he often refers to as 'Jamie Olive Oil') after reacting to a video where Jamie makes egg fried rice, which traumatized him badly, as well as his hatred of chilli jam, and the excess use of olive oil in any Asian foods he's recreating. He occasionally makes jokes about harsh Asian parenting and being "dumped" by his "ex-wife Auntie Helen". He is seen to love flames as much as he hates induction stoves. Since becoming viral in July 2020, Nigel uses the Uncle Roger persona as a depiction of a middle-aged Asian man with pronounced Malaysian Chinese accent (pronouncing words like "video" as "weejio", using verbal exclamations like "haiyaaa" and "fuiyohh") and embodies many East Asian stereotypes, such as wearing bright colored polo t-shirts, using phone waist bags, and an exaggerated obsession with the use of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in cooking. Since then, Nigel continues to assume the Uncle Roger persona with a variety of video critiques, such as reacting to cooking videos, working at restaurants, and visiting places related to Asian heritage. After his video went viral, both he and Patel went on BBC together, and did a cooking collaboration not long after. In his critique video, Nigel assumed the comedic persona of "Uncle Roger", a middle-aged Asian man with a pronounced Malaysian Chinese accent and prides himself on many East Asian stereotypes. In July 2020, he became viral as a result of a video criticizing a controversial BBC Food video of Hersha Patel cooking egg fried rice, where the method of cooking the rice in the video was widely panned by many Asian viewers for not washing the rice before cooking and for using a sieve. Having enjoyed pursuing comedy in clubs and festivals while studying at university, he eventually decided to become a full-time stand-up comedian not long after. īefore becoming a stand-up comedian, he moved to the UK to work as a data scientist and has a GitHub page.
